BRIEF BIO:

Born in 1988 in Sichuan, China, Yanyan Huang grew up in the United States and now lives and works between Beijing, New York, and California. Deriving influence from diverse cultures and time periods, her work maps out an elaborate array of temporal geographies, identities, and relationships.

Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows in China, Europe and the United States. Huang originally hoped to be a concert pianist – she turned to painting as the closest artform to classical music.

Her lyrical abstract canvases, filled with floating washes and hovering translucent forms and marks, echo her immersion in both western abstraction and Chinese calligraphy and xie yi ink painting traditions.

EXHIBITION HISTORY NA

Yanyan Huang says of her dynamic abstract canvases: “I see every gesture as embodying past, present and future—a line is a single distillation of years of practicing similar lines, a brushstroke is a distillation of years of practicing similar brushstrokes.”

Inflected by her art education in the USA and traditions of Euro-American abstraction as much as by xie yi ink painting, her works appear joyfully spontaneous, but this belies the deep knowledge and surety that lies behind her mark-making.

Huang plays with varying viscosities and degrees of transparency, with stencilled hard-edges intersecting with her curving, fluid sweeps of lilac, crimson and green. These paintings are filled with lyrical, flowing movement.

Huang told an interviewer that her art education began with her study of ballet and classical piano; she began to paint after deciding it was the closest form to music.

EXHIBITION HISTORY NA

Yanyan Huang sometimes describes herself as a ‘history painter’ by which she means that her work is infused with her own hybrid identity as a Chinese, American-trained artist who lives mostly in New York but whose dream is to live on the Mediterranean.

She is influenced by western traditions of abstract painting, and there are discernible hints of the ‘soak and stain’ canvases of Helen Frankenthaler in the play of intersecting opaque brush marks and swirling translucent washes in her canvases.

Her work is also inevitably inflected by her knowledge of Chinese calligraphy and of xie yi ink and brush painting.
